What Are Single-Phase Systems?
A single-stage implant is a one-piece implant device (also known as “one-piece” or “monoblock”), in which the implant body and prosthetic abutment are fused into a single titanium structure. Unlike two-stage implants, which consist of two separate components and, in most cases, require two distinct surgical procedures, the one-piece implant is placed into the bone in a single session and immediately protrudes through the gum, ready to receive the temporary prosthesis.
This “single-stage” approach eliminates the implant-abutment connection, eliminating microbiological gaps between the two components and reducing the risk of bacterial colonization typical of implant-prosthetic junctions. The procedure therefore ensures less gingival recession and softer tissue aesthetics that remain more stable over time.
Single-phase systems are recommended in the following cases:
- Immediate loading —the goal is to complete prosthetic rehabilitation in a single surgical session;
- Reduced interproximal space —e.g., upper lateral incisors, lower incisors;
- Minimally invasive approach —the patient requires fewer surgical incisions;
